Creating Space

2 April - 14 May 2009
In the present image era, less attention is paid to designing meaningful space. As a consequence, why and how a meaningful space produces its impact is often a mystery. During his speech to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture half a century ago, Gerrit Rietveld issued a plea for meaningful spaces: "In my opinion there will be more reason than ever to replace the architecture of mass (heavy or light) - with it's emphasis on form and boundaries rather than on scale, atmospehere and function  - by the architecture of space." His plea is still topical today. Architecture is the art of space. The architect creates space for a specific use. But how does this space become meaningful? What are the roles of light, sound and temperature? How is a space enclosed by a composition of materials? What is the relation between the interior and the exterior?
